View all 3 comments. View 2 comments. Nov 22, Aaron Terrazas rated it really liked it. Machado was known for taking long, contemplative walks and taking notes on the landscape, so this book is primarily composed of landscape poems--hence the title. Another of my favorites is The Ballad of Alvargonzalez, a legend of a man with three sons, two wicked, one good, and what becomes of them.

The only reason I'm giving this book four stars instead of five is reading the life's work or most of the life's work of one poet in one volume is a little overwhelming sort of like when I read the complete works of Anne Sexton in a month and thought I was going crazy. I'd prefer Machado in smaller doses. The poetry is gorgeous, but this is almost a complete works volume, and there is a lot of landscape poetry which might seem monotonous if you read the entire book all at once. My Spanish is not good, so why would I read a collection of poetry in a language of which that I have little comprehension?

When I was in Mallorca, I stopped by a bookstore to grab a Spanish cookbook, and I just happened to notice a large wall of poetry books. The woman at the store recommended I read Machado in his native language, and I couldn't really think of a good reason not to. I've previously read some of Machado's poetry, so the themes and language weren't entirely unfamiliar to me. That being said, it was obviously a very different experience to read the poetry in its original language.

While the strict language comprehension is difficult, the melodic nature of Spanish made this a pleasure.

Sep 18, Aroa rated it did not like it. Casi desnudo / Federico Patán. - Version details - Trove

He andado muchos caminos, he abierto muchas veredas; he navegado en cien mares, y atracado en cien riberas.

My childhood memories are here, images of palm trees and sun against a golden brilliance, distant bell towers with storks, city streets without women under an indigo sky, deserted swuares where blazing orange trees ripen with round vermillon fruit, and in a shady garden, the dusty branches of a lemon tree, pale yellow lemons reflected in the clear water of the fountains.

The scent of lilies and carnations, pungent odor of basil and mint. In their ragged dress, they are remnants of memory, castoffs the mind drags along.

One day, anointed with light from below, our virginal bodies will return to their ancient shore. Preoccupied with time and the relationship between interior and exterior realities, he writes with simultaneous simplicity and depth that resonate on many levels. A man returns from America into Castile. The return is not idyllic, it is a return to the reality of Castile. Two of my favorite passages are as follows. Despair says: all you have left of her is your bitterness. Beat, heart…The earth has not swallowed everything.

See my other reviews here! Found my new favorite poet, and loved the bilingual edition. O kindly water, leave behin Found my new favorite poet, and loved the bilingual edition. O kindly water, leave behind life as you depart! O you that go drop by drop, fountain to fountain and river to river, like this boring time flowing to the distant sea, with all that is trying to be born, all that hopes to blossom in the spring sun, be merciful, for tomorrow you will be an early ear of grain, a green meadow, pink flesh, and more: reason and madness and the bitterness of wishing to, but being unable to, believe, believe, believe!

This bilingual edition is a thorough and complete translation of early 20th century poetry. At times, his love of the land and the people reminds me of Whitman. However, being thorough, at times the collection is inconsistent, but this could just be that for early 21st century tastes, the hyperbole can seem overdone.
